Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Criticizes Union Leader for ‘Courtesan of Trump’ Statement
The Italian Prime Minister has strongly condemned the chief of the country’s biggest labor union after the official described her as a “courtesan” of former US President Donald Trump.
Context of the Disputed Comments
CGIL leader Maurizio Landini, who heads the CGIL union, issued the comment on a TV program this Tuesday. This occurred after global figures, including Meloni, convened for a summit on Middle East peace hosted by Egypt.
The union leader accused the Prime Minister of “doing nothing” to advance peace in Gaza, saying her participation was confined to “playing Trump’s courtesan”. Luckily, the Italian citizens demonstrated to uphold the honor and dignity of the nation,” he commented.
Meloni’s Response
In a social media post on Thursday, the Prime Minister remarked that the union chief was “evidently clouded by a mounting resentment (that I comprehend)”. She proceeded to post a definition of the term “courtesan”.
“I believe it is widely understood the usual interpretation associated with this term, but, to assist those who might not, I have posted the top definition obtained from a simple web search,” Meloni said, attaching a capture that read: “Woman of loose morals, heterosexual; euphemism, escort.”
She additionally rebuked her political rivals on the left, saying that over many years they had preached to us on respect for women” only to then attack a woman by “referring to her as a prostitute”.
Response from Landini
Replying to the post, Landini argued that there were “no misogynistic remarks” toward Meloni and that the term was meant to imply “Trump’s subordinate”.
Via a released message, he clarified: “In a 10-minute interview, which anyone can easily rewatch, to prevent misinterpretation or exploitation of the term, I immediately clarified the sense of my words – that the Prime Minister was on the coat tails of Trump, she attended Trump’s court, she was Trump’s lackey.”
Ties Between Meloni and Trump
The Italian leader has consistently maintained amicable ties with President Trump. During a speech during the Middle East event, the US President addressed Meloni – the sole female present at the summit – and complimented her beauty. “In the United States, it would be politically fatal,” he said. “But I’ll take the risk. Do you mind if I say you’re beautiful? Because you truly are beautiful.”
The US president later praised her as “motivational to all” in reference to the English version of her work, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which features a preface by Donald Trump Jr..
Past Events
In August, the Prime Minister reacted strongly after learning that altered images of her and other well-known Italian females had been uploaded to a pornographic website, expressing her disgust, and showing “empathy and assistance to every woman who have been violated, insulted, and offended”.
