2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Change Follows Poor Response
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a clearer direction.
The president expressed that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address player expectations.
Trend of Key Hires
This announcement echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire message from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to endure.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game demo was revealing. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It revealed the necessity for a more distinct vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed vision - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our fans.
The trust in this project strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most popular franchises in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to keep seeing the development of the game in the time to follow.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Leader
Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in last year alongside a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and trust your team can secure victory? The option is up to you."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official release date or supported systems, but enthusiasts can anticipate further news as development continues.
