Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a stake in the region of 5%.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold a third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 since Ineos bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the growth in market values of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the most successful sports film to date.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has won two of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
